Jacobs Ladder at the Athletic Business Conference

We exhibited at the AB Conference in San Diego this year. This has been our 10th year in a row at ABC. It was a great show, as we got to see many old friends and also met some great new friends. The Stairway was very well received as one of the very few self-powered stair climbers. Got a chance to talk to the guys from Woodway Treadmills and Pat O’Dell from Life Fitness. Looking forward to IHRSA this year again at San Diego (one of the most beautiful cities in the country) !

Stair Climbing Races

I remember in 1990, before I owned Jacobs Ladder, actually before Jacobs Ladder was invented, I got involved in a Stair Climb Race at the Library Building in Buffalo, NY. I had ran stairs as a way of training for basketball and volleyball in high school and college. In the 9th grade, my vertical jump was 15″ and by the time that I graduated from Penn State, my vertical jump had increased to 39.5″. So, needless to say, I have spent a fair amount of time in a stair case. In 1990, I had ran in a few 5K races but this was my first Stair Climb Race. Not knowing what to expect, I ran as fast as I could from the start, 2 stairs at a time (just like when I was training).… [Read More]

Is Jacobs Ladder Hard On Your Back?

We get the question all of the time at trade shows, “Isn’t Jacobs Ladder hard on your back?”. Actually, it’s the opposite. Jacobs Ladder is designed to not only take stress off of the lower back, but is designed to strengthen those areas of the back that are liable to de-stabilization and injury. Let me explain.

Most ladders you climb are pitched at a steep angle. The reason we designed the Jacobs Ladder at a mild 40 degree angle is to place the spine in a more neutral position and take stress off of the lower back. The workout is also low impact for the back, maintaining a positive climbing motion so there is no ‘bouncing’ that you may see on a treadmill or elliptical machine.… [Read More]

Is Functional Training Right For You?

Finding balance through fitnessI used to train for performance. Now, at age 50, I exercise so that I can continue to do the things that I enjoy and to keep my good health as long as possible. Although I can’t say with certainty that regular exercise will extend your life (my Polish grandmother lived until 85 and her only exercise was making pierogi!), I am convinced it will improve the quality of your life. Here is a helpful article from the Mayo Clinic on the many benefits of “Functional Exercise“.

As the article nicely states, functional exercises “are designed to train and develop your muscles to make it easier and safer to perform everyday activities, such as carrying groceries or playing a game of basketball with your kids.” Although these exercises are obviously ideal for non-athletes and those in rehab, functional training has become a buzzword in the sports gyms across America.… [Read More]

Metabolic Project Cardio Circuit Producing Big Results in L.A.

image

I got a chance last week to catch up with my friend Todd Person of Metabolic Project.  Located in Los Angeles,  Metabolic Project is a boutique personal training facility which caters to elite athletes from the high school level up to the biggest stars in the professional ranks.  In my opinion, Todd is one of the most sincere and intelligent people in the industry.  Todd’s been a big fan of the Jacobs Ladder for over five years now and, in turn, we love his creative approach to training.  For example, he mentioned to me how Metabolic Project has shown amazing results for their clients by connecting Jacobs Ladder with Woodway Treadmills and the Quadmill in a cardio circuit. … [Read More]
